AN INTERVIEW WITH @HARDCASTLETOWERS

25/03/2020

When you think of Bold, colourful and eclectic interiors, eccentric Instagrammer Joanne Hardcastle @hardcastletowers instantly springs to mind. Her quirky and unique interior design aesthetic is easily recognisable thanks to its yummy colour palette, Joanne’s individual creative flair and of course that iconic Smeg pink FAB28 refrigerator.
We were keen to find out more about Joanne’s home and what inspires her. Here’s what she said in a recent interview:

How did you find your house? Did it feel like home immediately?

We have lived here for 20 years; we came to view the house when the owner of the house came to view the little cottage that we were selling. We knew the area that she lived in was where we wanted to be. It was a really grotty old house that needed a lot of work doing to it when we bought it, but it did feel like home as soon as we walked in.

How have you made this house your home?

We have spent the last 20 years renovating the property, trying to put our own stamp on it whilst keeping the period features. The main building work was a kitchen extension. We’ve decorated each room in our own unique colourful style. When we had the extension built, I knew exactly the look I wanted for the kitchen and believe it or not it was designed around the pink Smeg fridge. I knew I wanted vibrant pastel colours, with nothing quite matching but everything from the same palette. I wanted open shelves and a real retro vibe.

Where do you get your design inspiration from? Instagram? Magazines? Friends/families properties?

I get my design inspiration from everywhere, sometimes it could be the colour of a plate, or a piece of furniture. I think the kitchen definitely has a 1950s diner vibe to it, and I was heavily influenced by Manuela Kjeilen @passionforbaking on Instagram.

What one Smeg appliance can you not live without?

I think it goes without saying that one Smeg product I could not live without is my pink fridge, it’s the thing I am most known for on Instagram; it even mention is it on the blue plaque on my front door! I also love my pink Smeg blender.

What does the Smeg brand mean to you?

The Smeg brand to me means luxurious retro styling, a real style statement.

What is the signature dish you cook up when you have guests over?

I love cooking and spend a lot of time in the kitchen but my favourite thing to do is bake, I love cooking all deserts, complicated ones, simple ones, hot ones and cold ones. I like to experiment with flavours and try and invent new things. My signature bake has got to be my salted caramel brownies.
